You have booked the flights. You have the ring. Now someone Googles "is Zanzibar safe?" and suddenly you are reading horror stories from 2014. Let us clear this up.

We are Zan Events. We live in Zanzibar. We work here every day. We welcome couples from all over the world — and we can tell you with confidence: Zanzibar is safe for honeymooners in 2026.

The Short Answer

Yes. Zanzibar is one of the safest destinations in East Africa. It is a semi-autonomous island with its own government, a strong tourism economy, and a local culture that genuinely welcomes visitors. Violent crime against tourists is extremely rare.

What About Petty Crime?

Like any tourist destination — from Barcelona to Bangkok — petty theft can happen. The rules are the same everywhere:

  • Do not leave valuables unattended on the beach
  • Use hotel safes for passports and cash
  • Avoid walking alone on empty beaches at night
  • Use reputable transport (your hotel or Zan Events can arrange this)

In areas like Bwejuu — where we host our events — the vibe is quiet, residential, and far from the busier tourist zones. Most couples tell us they feel safer here than in European cities.

Health and Medical

Zanzibar is in a malaria zone, so antimalarial medication is recommended. Consult your doctor before traveling. Beyond that:

  • Drink bottled water (available everywhere)
  • Use sunscreen — the equatorial sun is strong
  • There are clinics and a hospital in Stone Town for emergencies
  • Travel insurance is always a good idea

Transport and Getting Around

We always recommend pre-arranged transport rather than flagging down random taxis. Zan Events arranges airport transfers and local transport for all our couples — so you never have to negotiate or worry about routes.

The drive from the airport to Bwejuu takes about 45 minutes on a paved road. It is straightforward and safe during the day.

Is Bwejuu Beach Safe?

Bwejuu is one of the quietest areas on the island. It is not a party destination. There are no nightclubs, no crowds, no hassle. It is a peaceful stretch of coast with small boutique hotels, local restaurants, and palm trees as far as you can see.

Zan Orient — where we host ceremonies and dinners — is a safe, well-maintained property right on the beach. Couples consistently tell us it feels like a private paradise.

What About Scams?

Tourist scams in Zanzibar are mild compared to many destinations. The most common:

  • Overcharging for spice tours or boat trips (book through a trusted provider)
  • Beach vendors being persistent (a polite "no thank you" works)
  • Unlicensed tour guides (always use recommended operators)

When you book with Zan Events, we handle all vendor relationships. You do not need to negotiate, haggle, or worry about being overcharged. That is literally our job.

Cultural Respect

Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim. Outside of beach areas, it is respectful to dress modestly — especially in Stone Town. Cover shoulders and knees when visiting villages or markets. On the beach and at your hotel, normal beachwear is perfectly fine.

Locals are warm, friendly, and genuinely happy to see visitors. A simple "Jambo" (hello) goes a long way.

Our Honest Take

We have hosted hundreds of couples on Bwejuu beach. Not one has reported a safety incident. The biggest complaint we hear? "We did not stay long enough."

Zanzibar is not just safe — it is one of the most welcoming, peaceful, and beautiful places you will ever visit. And with Zan Events by your side, every detail is handled so you can focus on what matters: each other.
