What to Wear to a Beach Wedding in Zanzibar (Brides, Grooms & Guests)

Let's start with what nobody tells you: Zanzibar is hot. Not "warm summer day" hot — we're talking 30°C+ with humidity that makes everything stick. Add sand, wind, and the fact that you'll be barefoot, and suddenly that Pinterest-perfect outfit needs a reality check.

We've seen hundreds of couples get married on these beaches. Here's what actually works.

For Brides

The Dress

Forget the ball gown. Seriously. A heavy dress on a Zanzibar beach is a recipe for misery. What works beautifully:

  • Lightweight fabrics — chiffon, silk, linen, or cotton.
  • Simple silhouettes — A-line, slip dresses, or boho styles.
  • Short or midi length — if you don't want to deal with sand on your hem.
  • No train — unless you're okay with it dragging through wet sand.

Hair & Makeup

The wind will do things to your hair. Accept this. Loose, natural styles work best — braids, soft waves, or a low bun.

For makeup, waterproof everything. Our makeup artist uses products that survive the heat — if you book the Beauty add-on ($150), she'll make sure you look fresh from first photo to last.

Shoes (Or Lack Thereof)

Most brides go barefoot. The sand is soft, the photos look amazing, and you won't sink.

For Grooms

  • Linen shirt — rolled sleeves, slightly unbuttoned. White or light blue photographs best.
  • Linen or cotton trousers — light colors. Chinos work too.
  • No jacket — unless it's linen and you're okay taking it off after 10 minutes.
  • Barefoot or leather sandals — no socks, no dress shoes, no exceptions.

For Guests

  • Women: Light sundress or maxi dress. Flat sandals.
  • Men: Short-sleeve button-down or polo. Light trousers or tailored shorts. Sandals.
  • Everyone: Sunscreen, sunglasses, and something to fan yourself with.

Accessories That Work

  • Floral crown — included in our wedding packages.
  • Simple jewelry — less is more.
  • Fresh bouquet — we source local tropical flowers.

One Last Thing

Bring a change of clothes for after the ceremony. Many couples change into something casual for the dinner or beach walk afterward.
